Conception
For this project I was tasking with creating a shelf for a child. While researching ideas I realized that quite a few options had already been created. From cute animal designs to mountains, everything had been done before. That led to thinking about my own childhood, and what made it special. From a young age my parents introduced me to Star Wars, and I have been a fan ever since.
It was from those memories that the R2 shelf was conceived.
Final Piece
The R2 shelf was finished with blue primer/spray paint and a satin Osmo clearcoat.
Rationale
My goal for my watch concept was simple — create something with a singular purpose. I wanted it to be minimal, but functional, so that it remained an aid, rather than a distraction. In an age of countless devices being connected, and adding more and more features, I wanted to hone in on one thing.
My watch does one thing — tell time.
Process
I based my watch design on the Draftsman watch by Nendo. After designing some concepts for the face of the watch, I began 3D-modelling it. Once the model was complete I rendered it with textures to complete the design.
This clock was inspired by Muji, which translates to, “no-brand, quality goods.” I designed it to be easily manufactured using a jig, one piece of 12” x 12” Sintra plastic and a clock mechanism.
The resulting clock is clean, modern and functional.
